Soepenberg launches concrete vase inspired by Niemeyer

Dutch designer Gert-Jan Soepenberg has designed a vase inspired by Oscar Niemeyer's Palácio de Alvorada in Brazil's capital Brasília.

Vase #1 is made out of rotation moulded concrete. Rotation moulding is an industrial process normally reserved for plastics. Soepenberg built a custom machine to create the thinnest possible concave shapes for his vases. The inside of the vase is acrylic resin coated which makes it watertight.

Vase #1 is the first in a series of architecture-derived vases. His love for architecture and architectural background have led Soepenberg to be inspired by Niemeyer, one of the architects with the best feel for proportions and aesthetics.

“I have abstracted the Palácio de Alvorada's strongest shape into a vase that captures the spirit of the building.„ Gert-Jan Soepenberg

Gert-Jan Soepenberg is a Dutch product designer and interior architect working from Groningen (NL). His designs are statements for quality products. They possess a crafted and industrial honesty.

“I believe that it's impossible to create a cherished product, without giving the initial design the personal attention it deserves in the first place.„ Gert-Jan Soepenberg

All products are designed with an eye for detail and quality, and made from plain, natural or recycled materials. Previously he designed Chair #1 (inspired by Rietveld’s Z-chair), Stool #1 and Sink #1.

From 14th till 19th April Gert-Jan Soepenberg exhibits during Ventura Lambrate 2015 in Milan, where he will be giving live demonstrations of the production of Vase # 1.
